What it is

Communication is the most-tested skill and the worst-tested skill.

Most communication assessments either grade grammar (which AI can fake) or score "fluency" subjectively (which humans can't grade consistently). Skolarli does neither alone — we test the four core modes (reading, listening, writing, speaking) plus the workplace-specific dimensions that actually predict on-the-job communication: business email, professional tone, and cross-cultural awareness.

Built specifically for Indian workplaces and global hiring contexts. Our scenarios reflect real workplace situations — not artificial textbook exercises. The goal isn't perfect English. It's effective workplace communication.

Assessment types

Six dimensions of communication. Tested separately, scored together.

Mix and match the dimensions that fit the role. Each is scored independently, then synthesized into a workplace-communication readiness profile.

Comprehension

Reading Comprehension

Tests the ability to extract meaning, infer intent, and identify implications from workplace passages — emails, briefs, technical docs, and stakeholder communications.

  • Workplace-context passages
  • Inference, intent, and implication questions
  • Tonal awareness checks
  • Time-tracked per passage
Auditory

Listening Comprehension

Audio-based scenarios test active listening, accent comprehension, and the ability to extract instructions or sentiment from spoken workplace communication.

  • Multi-accent audio (Indian, US, UK, global English)
  • Meeting, call, and instruction scenarios
  • Sentiment and tone identification
  • Replay disabled to mirror real-world listening
Expression

Writing Skills

Free-text writing tasks scored against rubrics for clarity, structure, professionalism, and audience fit. Tests grammar, but more importantly, judgment.

  • Email drafting, summary, and persuasive tasks
  • Rubric-based scoring with SkoAI assistance
  • Tone, structure, and audience-fit dimensions
  • AI-assistance blocked via SIB
Verbal

Speaking & Verbal Fluency

Recorded speaking tasks evaluate fluency, articulation, structure, and confidence. Measures how candidates would actually communicate in calls, presentations, and customer interactions.

  • Read-aloud, repeat, and free-speak tasks
  • Pronunciation, fluency, and pacing analysis
  • Voice fingerprinting confirms identity
  • Best for customer-facing & client-facing roles
Workplace-fit

Business English & Professional Tone

Tests workplace-appropriate language, professional tone, and contextually appropriate phrasing. Catches "kindly do the needful" and similar dated phrasing that hurts in client-facing roles.

  • Email professionalism scoring
  • Tone calibration (formal / neutral / friendly)
  • Idiomatic and contextual phrasing
  • Common India-English pitfalls flagged
Global

Cross-cultural Communication

Scenarios test awareness of communication norms across geographies — directness vs. indirection, hierarchical context, time and conflict styles. Essential for global IT, BPO, and consulting roles.

  • Geography-specific scenarios (US, UK, EU, APAC)
  • Conflict, escalation, and disagreement styles
  • Implicit vs explicit communication awareness
  • Useful for offshore IT, BPO, and consulting
Why Skolarli

Communication scoring that both AI and recruiters trust.

Most communication assessments fail in one of two ways: too lenient on AI-written responses, or too rigid on candidates whose English is fluent but not native. Skolarli avoids both.

AI-written responses caught

Writing tasks run inside the Skolarli Integrity Browser with all AI tools blocked at the OS level. What you read on the page is what the candidate actually wrote — not what ChatGPT wrote for them.

Voice fingerprinting on speaking tasks

Speaker biometrics confirm the candidate speaking is the same person who started the assessment. No friend with better English completing the speaking section.

India-English aware

We don't penalize fluent Indian English, but we do flag dated business phrasing ("kindly do the needful," "revert back," "prepone") that hurts in client-facing roles. Useful signal — not punishment.

SkoAI-assisted, human-decided scoring

Free-text writing and recorded speaking are scored with SkoAI providing quality scores, recommended marks, and identified themes — as inputs to your human evaluator. AI assists; humans decide.

Six-dimension profile

You don't get one fuzzy "communication score." You get six independently-scored dimensions surfaced as a profile — so the dossier shows where a candidate is strong, where they're weak, and what role-fit decisions follow.

Decision-ready dossiers

Reading and listening scores, writing samples with SkoAI scoring, audio recordings of speaking tasks, integrity context, and the final synthesis — bundled into a single export-ready candidate brief.

Common questions

Communication testing, upfront.

How long does a communication assessment take?
Most communication assessments run 30 to 60 minutes. A focused screening (reading + writing + business English) is around 30 minutes. A full six-dimension assessment including speaking and listening tasks runs 50-60 minutes. Speaking tasks themselves are typically 8-12 minutes of actual recording time.
Do you penalize Indian English?
No. Indian English is a legitimate global English variant, and fluent Indian-English speakers are not marked down for accent, regional vocabulary, or local phrasing. What we do flag is workplace-inappropriate phrasing (dated business idioms like "kindly do the needful," "please revert back," "prepone") that hurts candidates in client-facing roles regardless of where they're from. The scoring is workplace fit, not accent.
How do you prevent candidates from using ChatGPT for the writing section?
Writing tasks are run inside the Skolarli Integrity Browser, which blocks ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, and other AI assistants at the OS level. Network-level domain blocking shuts down web-based AI tools simultaneously. Every blocked attempt is logged in the candidate's trust score. The text in the dossier is what the candidate actually typed.
How are speaking tasks scored?
Speaking tasks are recorded inside the assessment and analyzed across multiple dimensions: pronunciation clarity, fluency (pace, pauses, fillers), structure (logical sequencing of ideas), and confidence (vocal energy and conviction). SkoAI provides initial scoring; human evaluators review and finalize. Voice fingerprinting confirms the same speaker is present across the entire assessment session.
Can candidates use the speaking-section microphone tools to fake their voice?
Voice fingerprinting compares the speaker biometrics across the entire session — not just within one task. If a candidate hands off the microphone to someone else for the speaking section, the voice fingerprint mismatch is detected and flagged. Virtual microphones and audio routing software are blocked at the OS level by SIB. We can't promise zero spoofing, but we make it significantly harder than other platforms.
Do you support speaking tasks in languages other than English?
Yes — Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and other major Indian languages are supported for speaking and listening tasks. Cross-cultural communication scenarios for global roles are typically run in English. Custom language support is available for enterprise contracts.
Can we customize the assessment for specific roles?
Yes. Customers can author custom scenarios with their own writing prompts, listening passages, speaking tasks, and rubric-backed scoring. SkoAI Quiz can also generate communication scenarios from your customer playbook, sales scripts, or internal communication style guides. Custom content stays private to your tenant.
